Rex Navarrete

Many claim that college is the turning point in one’s life, when one finds his or her future. This was the case for San Francisco Bay Area comedian Rex Navarrete, when Navarrete’s college professor told him he was wasting his talents.

“He told me, ‘Get out of my office-we shouldn’t be joking here, you should be taking those jokes to the stage,” recalls Navarrete of his Asian American Studies professor Dan Gonzales, the teacher who encouraged his dream to be a comedian in 1989.

Navarrete gathers all of his material from what he calls “real Rex moments,” reality and shared life experiences. “I think everything has humor; you will always find humor. I don’t always make stuff up. Even though most of my material is geared for a Filipino audience, if you’re smart enough you’ll understand the universality of it.

Bad Royale

Maor Levi, Kevin Wild and Bruce Karlsson are recognizable names in the land of euphoric progressions and uplifting vocals. With multiple individual releases on labels like Anjunabeats, Spinnin’ and Armada, the Diplo-helmed Mad Decent is likely the last place that their respective fans would think to look for future records. But what began as a half-serious side project cooked up with fellow housemate Elias Ghosn one year ago, has become something quite real: Bad Royale have over 30 tracks set to be released by the end of 2015 between Mad Decent and Buygore, and they’ll join the latter’s label boss Borgore on his fall tour. We caught up with Bad Royale at their San Diego home just before they dropped their debut, the ‘Move Like’ EP, on Mad Decent to find out how a few friends went from trance to trap under the guise of four kings.

Ginuwine

Ginuwine was one of R&B’s preeminent love men during the ’90s heyday of hip-hop soul. Initially teamed with Timbaland, the most innovative producer of the late ’90s, Ginuwine’s sultry, seductive crooning earned him a substantial female following and made him a regular presence on the R&B charts, even after the futuristic production he favored was eclipsed by the more organic, retro-leaning neo-soul movement. In New York, he met up with young producer Timbaland and cut the track “Pony,” whose slow, halting groove and impassioned vocals helped Ginuwine land a deal with Sony’s 550 Music imprint.
