Herstory: The Legal History of Chinese-American Women
The San Diego Chinese Historical Museum is excited to announce Herstory. This temporary exhibition will partner artifacts from the Museum’s permanent collection with a pictorial on the legal history of Chinese-American women, curated by legal historian and Attorney at Law, Chang Chiu Chen. The informative panels developed by Dr. Chen pay tribute to the struggles and triumphs of Chinese-American women, as they fought for the right to immigrate, to live with dignity, to attend public schools, to have the freedom to marry, and to be able to enjoy success in the United States. They were exhibited for the first time in June 2015 at the National History Museum in Taiwan and have since been shown at diverse locations across North America.
Opening to the public on Saturday, March 9, 2019, at the San Diego Chinese Historical Museum’s Chuang Archive and Learning Center (541 Second Avenue, in downtown San Diego) this exhibit will form part of the network of events in celebration of Women’s History Month across the county. At the exhibition opening, from 2 to 4 p.m. on the 9th, Dr. Chen will be at the Museum to speak on her research of immigration cases from China to the United States, and how this research, combined with interest in women’s issues, founded Herstory.
